Bold Leadership & Self-Expression: Moving Beyond Playing Small

Woman stepping into bold leadership and authentic self-expression

There is a version of leadership that looks confident on the outside and then there is the kind that feels steady and aligned on the inside.

In this episode, I spoke with Michelle Vandepas about what bold leadership can look like in practice. Not in a performative sense, but in a way that feels grounded and honest.

One idea that stood out is that bold leadership can begin with giving yourself permission to be who you are, while staying aware of how you show up. That balance can quietly shape how leadership is experienced, both internally and in your relationships.

When “Authenticity” Gets Misunderstood

Authenticity is often spoken about as simply “being yourself,” but that can sometimes lean into reacting without reflection.

What came through in this conversation is a more considered perspective. Authenticity can feel less like reacting in the moment and more like responding from a clear, steady place. Being fully yourself, while also allowing space for listening and awareness, can shift how your presence is felt.

What Holding Back Can Cost

Holding back does not always feel obvious at first, but over time it can show up in different ways.

For Michelle, it once showed up physically, particularly in her throat. It felt like a reflection of what had not yet been expressed. As she became more comfortable with her voice, those patterns began to ease.

It is a reminder that expression, even in small ways, can create a sense of release.

The Ways We Downplay Ourselves

Many people find themselves softening their own abilities without fully realizing it.

Statements like “I’m not really a writer” or “I don’t think I could do that” can feel casual, yet they often sit on top of something more. There is usually capacity there, even if it has not been fully explored.

Growth, in this sense, can look less like becoming someone else and more like allowing what is already there to expand over time.

The Quiet Influence of “What Will People Think?”

For many, holding back is connected to how something might be received.

That quiet awareness of “what will people think?” can shape decisions in subtle ways. Shifting attention toward what feels meaningful or aligned can begin to soften that pressure.

It becomes less about being seen by everyone and more about staying connected to what feels true.

Small Shifts Can Open Things Up

One of the simplest ideas from this conversation was writing things down.

Not as a task, but as a way of creating clarity. When thoughts move from your head onto paper, they can begin to feel more tangible and less overwhelming.

From there, small shifts can feel more accessible. Trying something new or making a slightly different choice can open new directions in quiet ways.

Deciding and Letting It Unfold

There is often a moment where you decide who you want to be or what you want to create.

At the same time, that decision does not always translate instantly into reality. Sometimes it unfolds gradually, through small adjustments and lived experience.

That space in between can be part of the process, rather than something to rush through.

When It’s Not About Fear, But Energy

Not every moment of feeling stuck comes from fear.

Sometimes it is connected to capacity, especially when you are holding multiple responsibilities. In those seasons, rest can play a meaningful role in staying supported.

Creating space to pause can make it easier to return with more clarity.

A More Gentle Way to Think About Leadership

What stood out most is that bold leadership does not have to be loud or forceful.

It can feel steady, aware, and intentional. Less about becoming someone new and more about allowing more of who you already are to be expressed over time.

If any part of this resonates, it might be an invitation to notice where you may have been holding back, and what a small, honest step forward could look like from where you are now.
