Personal Branding and Perceived Value: Why Your Brand Matters More Than Your Talent

Nobody hires you because you're talented and that's a hard thing to sit with. What brings clients in is how you made them feel before a word was exchanged.

That was the heart of a recent conversation on Business Therapy™ with branding expert Lori Graham, known as BuzzBabeCreative, whose twenty years in luxury real estate and home staging taught her that a client rarely walks away over price. More often, the decision happens three seconds into a scroll.

From Luxury Real Estate to Building a Personal Brand

Lori's path started nowhere near branding. She began in property management, then luxury real estate, where she noticed multi-million dollar homes sitting vacant and lifeless at open houses, quietly losing their perceived value.

That observation led her into coaching, and then her true sweet spot: helping business owners look like the value they already provided. That's how Boss Babe Creative came to be.

Perceived Value Is Built, Not Accidental

Perceived value isn't a trick, Lori says, it's a discipline practiced on purpose. A home isn't worth two million dollars because someone says so, it's worth that because the lighting, furniture and flow were arranged for a buyer to feel it, and a personal brand works the same way.

Outdated photos, a mismatched Instagram feed, showing up a little too casual, these small gaps can quietly chip away at trust even when the work is excellent. Think of a Chanel store or a red palm tree logo in Southern California, that instant recognition is consistency, repeated.

Brand Consistency: You Are Your Personal Brand

Something Lori shared has stayed with me: she doesn't just build brands, she lives inside her own. Her gym clothes, her wardrobe, even her color palette are chosen so clients, often stressed and scattered, feel calm the moment they see her. Branding isn't a logo picked once and forgotten, it's a feeling kept alive on purpose.

Brand Credibility in Your Home Staging Business

We talked about the discomfort of paying for photography when it feels like an expense rather than an investment. I shared my own experience with Genesis Home Staging, where investing early in strong photography let me put my work forward with confidence, images still working for me years later. Lori's suggestion: revisit the budget each quarter, no mansion required, just someone who can tell a real story with what's already there.

Personal Branding Tips: Own the Problem Before You Talk About It

We also touched on mindset. Lori's noticed a familiar pattern: two burned-out business owners find each other and spend their energy commiserating, which feels good but moves nothing forward. With coaching clients, she keeps it simple: name the problem, own the part played in it, and sit with it until ready to work through it. A little self-awareness, she says, is the fastest way out.

Freedom Is the Point for Creative Business Owners

We ended on something every business owner recognizes, building something for freedom, then somehow ending up shackled to it. Lori's answer wasn't complicated: bring in help where it drains you, let your visuals carry some of the selling, and build a brand strong enough to run without constant hovering. Small shifts, real room to breathe.

Quick Answers

What is "perceived value" in branding? The sense of worth a client feels before they know the details, shaped by visuals and consistency rather than price alone.

How can a small business improve perceived value on a budget? One strong photography session, reused consistently across a website and social channels, goes a long way.
